The initial lecture in the Joffre Lanning Coe Lecture Series was
given by America's premier historic archaeologist, Stanley South, on
early histortical archaeology of North Carolina on October 7, 2006 at
the North Carolina Museum of History. Dr. South's work has profoundly
influenced the legacy of American archaeology through his innovations of
"mean ceramic dating" and "pattern analysis", which involve applying
statistical analysis to modern historic archaeology. South has contributed
through the excavation of numerous archaeological sites at Town Creek Indian
Mound, along the Roanoke River and the historic sites of Brunswick Town,
Halifax, and more. His endearing wit and his yarn spinning talents added
to the liveliness of the lecture and appealed to all ages. The slide show
presented many of his experiences, both scientific and personal.
